RMS Titanic 95th Anniversary

SOUTHAMPTON AND THE TITANIC

At 11.40pm on the 14th April 1912 RMS Titanic struck an iceberg near Newfoundland in the North Atlantic.

At 12.20am on the 15th April the crew was given the order to lower the lifeboats with women and children.

The Titanic sank at 2.20am on the 15th April.

Of the 1523 people who lost their lives 549, mainly crew members, came from Southampton.

The disaster, which made headlines around the world, had a devastating effect on the people of Southampton.

There is a full programme of events being held during April 2009 and beyond leading up to the 100th anniversary in 2012.

2010 - 16, 17, 18 April
2011 - 15, 16, 17 April
2012 - 13, 14, 15 April (Easter weekend)
